Safety is the number one priority for the Air Industry. Last year 42000 airports worldwide facilitated over 30 million flights, and transported 3 billion passengers, accounting for €515 billion EUR in revenues. Airports spend €2,5B EUR annually on Flight Inspections – the mandatory checks & calibrations of Navigational Aids, performed with executive aircrafts, pilots and technical crew members - causing 672000h of runways closed to commercial air traffic, which resulted in €1,89B EUR of lost income for commercial airports, and 51TN of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere.
CANARD aims to revolutionize how airports check that their security systems are fully operational by replacing the current calibration units with a CANARD UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or drone), equipped with IoT sensors and connected on real time with a ground based data management system) that automatically performs the Flight Inspection of aeronautical Navigation Aids, supports an eco-friendly 0% emissions procedure, and complies with all international security regulations.

Goals & Challenges
We aim to be the first company in the World to fully automate the Flight Inspection (FI) process by using Augmented Reality UAVs, dramatically reducing the costs of the process, obviating the need to put human lives at risk during the flight inspections, lowering the time that runways are inoperative for commercial flights (direct impact on operating revenues), eliminating the noise and pollution caused by FIs and being able to operate on demand. In summary, our value proposition is cost and time reduction, high performances, customization, risk reduction, accessibility and convenience/usability.
We are positioned as Product vendor and supplier of operational services (calibrations). It brings excellent opportunities for each airport. Airports must (by law) perform the calibration of PAPI and other NAVAIDS due to the regulation imposed by Aviation Authorities. Our solution really solves their problem (the current solution is inefficient and expensive).
The choice of FIWARE
CANARD System will take advantage of various FIWARE generic and specific enablers to have a ready-to-use MVP(Minimum viable product). There are some peculiarities intrinsic to the project that need to be faced during the implementation of the system that are aside the scope of the FIWARE.
FIWARE was chosen by its unique capability of merging Internet of things into this state of the art project. It allow us to integrate Security, Augmented Reality, the different signals coming from our drones into a modular application, that can be scaled depending on the needs of our clients.
Products developed with FIWARE
The FIWARE capabilities will be used to implement CANARD´s core functionalities and user interface. The final implementation of the project will provide an homogeneous and automatic way to calibrate the airport’s PAPI lights. The implementation of this system will have a paramount impact on the aerospace industry.
